FRED FLINTSTONE spent most of his cartoon life putting stuff on the slate.
Bowling shoes, brontosaurus ribs, a little white dress for Wilma – he cared not for the credit crunch in prehistoric Bedrock.
But best pal Barney Rubble was a little more shrewd. He might have allowed Fred to lead him astray in the cartoon capers but when it came to cash there was nothing to touch Barney.
Fast forward a couple of hundred thousand years and I don’t think there’ll be anything to touch another Barney in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
BARNEY ROY (3.35) really impressed me in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury. He got a bit outpaced before storming home over seven furlongs and the step up to a mile should help him land the first Classic of the season.
He’s up against Churchill. Aidan O’Brien’s ace was the star juvenile last season and his Dewhurst success shows he’ll have no problem with the track.

One could be forgiven for thinking the quote “history will be kind to me for I intend to write it” is attributed to Ireland’s Aidan. But it’s not. It was Churchill. Today I’m hoping it will be Barney Roy.
Earlier on the card it should pay to follow PROFITABLE (2.20). He won the Palace House 12 months ago and I reckon he’ll repeat that win.

Clive Cox’s speedster went on to win the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and he should have the class to overcome his draw in stall one.
GALAPIAT (2.55) is worth chancing in the Jockey Club Stakes and the old firm of Ryan Moore and Sir Michael Stoute should take the opener with BALLET CONCERTO (1.50).
Stoute is also the man to follow down at Goodwood. His DUBKA (2.05) looks well up to Listed level and I fancy her to kick her season off with a win.
Templegate's tenner
- £4 win New World Power
- £4 win Barney Roy
- 50p win Trixie – New World Power, Dubka, Ballet Concerto
The seven-furlong handicap looks a hell of a lot trickier but MAKE MUSIC (2.40) should give us a run for our money from a decent draw.
But my best bet needs a bit of patience. NEW WORLD POWER (7.50) runs at Doncaster tonight but I’m confident he will be worth the wait.
He ran well in some good maidens last year and he’ll love the step up to 1m6f for this handicap debut. A spin in a charity race should have put the edge on him.
Wins for those rock-solid runners will surely be worth a Yabba Dabba Doo or two. You betcha.
