SOUTHWELL

VIRNON really should have won at Ayr last time but he made a tired jump late on that meant he had to settle for second. This slight drop back in distance on better ground should help on that score. This is a trappy race with three of the four having every chance, but he can come home first.

EATON ROCK hated being dropped back to 2m when third at Towcester last time and will find this longer distance much more suitable. He was a close second at Huntingdon over 3m in January and it’s a plus to see a more experienced pilot take over from a claimer in the saddle today.

EARLSHILL was pulled up at Chepstow last time when it looked like something was wrong rather than him lacking ability. He had earlier shaped really nicely here on his hurdling debut when finishing second over this distance. He’s been given a little rest since that last mishap and Dan Skelton’s horses are in good form at present.

MALAPIE came back from almost two years off to run really well here last time out. He might have won but for a mistake at the second-last yet he ran on strongly to grab second. He’s been given 34 days off which should stop him bouncing and a repeat of his last effort would be good enough.

STARLIGHT COURT put in the best effort of his young hurdling career at Warwick last time, finishing a solid third in a fair contest. He was held up for a long time there and came home strongly, which bodes well for this step up in distance. He won’t mind some juice in the ground and improvement looks assured.
4.30
OVERAWED showed some promise when fifth at Musselburgh last time on just her third spin over hurdles. She wasn’t asked too many questions there and gives the impression that she’s capable of better. This looks a modest race and she is on a fair enough opening handicap mark.
