WINTER BREAK

Grendisar to take time out

The six-year-old will be kept fresh for a crack at the Winter Derby and Finals Day at Lingfield which are his two big targets this season

GRENDISAR will be given a short break before returning to action next year for a hat-trick bid in the Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield in February.

Since being purchased by Middleham Park Racing, Marco Botti's six-year-old has suffered two straight defeats, the most recent of which when he was third in the Quebec Stakes at the Surrey track on Saturday.

Middleham Park syndicate manager Tim Palin said: "On neither occasion on his last two runs has the race been run to suit. They have been slowly-run races.

"On Saturday he was held up a little bit too far off the pace, but that was not the jockey's fault. Unfortunately, from the draw he had he got shuffled back.

"Fair play to the winner (Battalion) he was in the right place on Saturday and by the time we got going he had flown.

"These two races are prep races for the two big ones in the spring, the Winter Derby and Finals Day. Both races will have a full field and they will go a proper pace.

"The Winter Derby Trial will be his next run."
