Godolphin have strong Cup team
Charlie Appleby's horses have been in great form in Australia and Oceanographer continued the winning run at Flemington on Saturday
OCEANOGRAPHER snatched a place in the Melbourne Cup with a dramatic win in the Lexus Stakes at Flemington.
Charlie Appleby's four-year-old needed a win to secure his place in Tuesday's showpiece event, and he achieved it in thrilling style.
He looked to be going nowhere under Kerrin McEvoy as he turned into the straight with a ton of work left to do but McEvoy got him up to win in the final strides as he reeled in Tom Melbourne.
He will now be part of Godolphin's formidable Cup team as they attempt to win it for the first time.
Appleby said: ""We are having a fantastic run here and I just have to congratulate the team who freshened him up since his last run. Kerrin has given him a fantastic ride and I'm delighted for everyone.
"Whether he can win the Cup or not I don't know but he can back-up for sure.
"He came out of the last race so well and he was bucking and kicking when I saw him this morning. He is thriving with the sun on his back.
"Whatever all the horses do now, they've done us proud and we will enjoy Tuesday."
Oceanographer will join Hartnell (John O'Shea), Qewy (Appleby), Beautiful Romance (Saeed bin Suroor) and Secret Number (Bin Suroor) in Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.
