Frankie Dettori leads daughter Ella down to first ever race before Magnolia Cup at Goodwood ends in dramatic dead-heat

THIS is the brilliant moment Frankie Dettori leads daughter Ella down to the start for her first ever race as a jockey.

Dettori, 50, guided 19-year-old Ella to the stalls for the charity Magnolia Cup race at Glorious Goodwood on Thursday.

But the contest ended in a dramatic dead-heat with judges unable to split two runners following a thrilling finish.

Legendary trainer John Gosden's daughter Thea Gosden-Hood and Candida Crawford both hit the line in first, sharing the spoils.

The real winner was charity though, with all ten jockeys raising more than £50,000 for Smart Works.

The parade paddock at Goodwood was lit up with the amateur riders' colourful silks just before their big moment.

No one stood out more than Dettori, who posed with his family ahead of Ella's debut in the saddle.

The world's most famous jockey has seen and done it all during his incredible career, which shows no sign of slowing down despite his advancing years.

But now he got a taste of what his family - he has five kids with wife Catherine - go through every time he races and risks life and limb in the saddle.

Ella, who said her dad tries to go to parties with her and her mates, bolted home at speeds of up to 40mph in the race.

And she said afterwards: "Dad gave me a few tips before the race. I hope I made him proud. That was my aim."

Fortunately all jockeys and horses returned home safe and sound - although there was drama for Gosden-Hood and rival Rachel Stringer.

Gosden-Hood was unshipped on her way down while Football Focus presenter Stringer's horse refused to race.

Gosden-Hood was aboard horse She Got The Jockey and Crawford, a freelance rider, was on Mine Behind.

The daughter of the iconic trainer said: "Coming from a racing family, I think there’s a misconception that I’ve been riding all my life, but I haven’t sat on a horse for 15 years, let alone a racehorse.

"I was literally starting from scratch. I had to go to a riding school to learn how to trot, so it’s been a long journey.

"I’d really like to thank everyone at Clarehaven (father and brother Thady’s yard in Newmarket) – I was honestly such a nuisance.

"They’ve taught me absolutely everything, and everyone has just been so kind and so supportive."

Samantha Cameron was at the track to watch the action - and see her former special adviser Isabel Spearman compete in the race.

She was one of the ten amateur riders who have gone through gruelling fitness tests and riding work to get ready for their big day.
