FedEx Cup: Why does Justin Thomas start Tour Championship on 10 under par and what scores do others start on?

JUSTIN THOMAS is best placed to win the FedEx Cup and Tour Championship this week - because he will be in front of the other players before play has even started.

American Thomas, who won the BMW Championship last week, will start the season finale at East Lake on 10 under par.

The winner of the Tour Championship will also win the FedEx Cup.

The player who finishes top will pocket a massive £12.4million - the biggest prize in golf.

Why does Justin Thomas start on 10 under?

Starting on 10 under par is Thomas' reward for being the No 1 ranked player in the FedEx Cup standings.

The starting scores are staggered backwards from there.

Patrick Cantlay, second in the rankings, will start the Tour Championship on eight under par.

Thomas has a head start on the rest because he has earned it - some may argue this - through the season-long points race.

What do the other golfers start on?

The Tour Championship is made up of the top 30 golfers on the PGA Tour.

Here are their starting scores.

10 under: Thomas

8 under: Patrick Cantlay

7 under: Brooks Koepka

6 under: Patrick Reed

5 under: Rory McIlroy

4 under: Jon Rahm, Matt Kuchar, Xander Schauffele, Webb Simpson, Abraham Ancer

3 under: Gary Woodland, Tony Finau, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama

2 under: Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Brandt Snedeker, Rickie Fowler, Kevin Kisner

1 under: Marc Leishman, Tommy Fleetwood, Corey Conners, Sungjae Im, Chez Reavie

Even par: Bryson DeChambeau, Louis Oosthuizen, Charles Howell III, Lucas Glover, Jason Kokrak

Why isn't Tiger Woods playing?

Tiger Woods is not playing because he did not make the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Woods is the defending champion at the Tour Championship.

His win here last year was his first for five years and came before he claimed his 15th Major championship at The Masters.

Only to the top 30 players advance to the season finale at East Lake.
