'WILD THING' John Daly had fans in stitches when, asked by someone in the crowd how his knee felt, replied: "Like s***."
The 1991 PGA Championship winner, 53, has been given special dispensation to drive a cart during this week's tournament because he has a dodgy leg joint.
He was zooming round close to his legions of followers during round one at Bethpage Black in New York.
And asked by one how his knee was doing, a hobbling Daly wearing New York-themed trousers deadpanned: "Like s***."
He then got in his buggy and drove off.
Daly was mocked by Tiger Woods for using a cart.
Woods memorably won the 2008 US Open with a torn ACL, and asked about Daly using a cart, said: "As far as JD taking a cart... I walked with a broken leg, so..."
Daly, who uses a cart on the Champions Tour, where players are all over 50, has osteoarthritis in his knee and has a daily injection for type 2 diabetes.
He was granted an exemption for the buggy under the Americans With Disabilities Act.
Woods required surgery after that win in '08, and Daly hit back: "He got his [knee] fixed for some reason.
"No doctor will replace my knee because of a different type of problem.
"It's hard to explain why. I'm not a doctor. I just try to do what they say.
"Osteoarthritis is a tough thing, brother. If my knee was broke, I would have had it fixed. But my situation is totally different. It’s painful as hell is all I can say. As was Tiger’s, I’m sure."
