Ian Poulter to play it cool before going ‘super aggressive’ on back nine Sunday in bid to win the Masters 2019
Englishman sits five under through two rounds and is primed to charge for his first green jacket
IAN POULTER says he will play it cool before going "super aggressive" when it matters the most in his bid to win the Masters.
The Englishman is right in the hunt on five under par after two rounds at Augusta - two behind five leaders including Francesco Molinari and Jason Day.
But nestled among a host of major winners on the leaderboard, Poults, 43, is treating it like a game of chess.
He knows birdie runs are possible but after a second-round one-under 71 insisted he will bide his time before charging to glory.
Poulter said: "As long as I'm there with nine [holes] to go on Sunday I'm going to try to be super aggressive. Who knows what can happen?
"We've seen runs, five birdies to close it out, it's possible. Hopefully I can be in the mix."
Poulter made three birdies - including two on holes 12 and 13 at Amen Corner - plus two bogeys in a solid second round.
But a three-putt bogey on the difficult 14th green still irked him after play.
Poulter added: "I'm a little frustrated with a couple of holes coming in. I missed a putt on the last, had a good up and down on 17... but three-putted 14.
"It's OK. I'm on the board and I'm in position. It's going to be a good weekend.
"Tee to green it's been great. I'm trying to be aggressive to some pins but it's easy to miss a couple, which I did.
"But I hung in there and my game is in shape. I feel pretty good."
