The Open 2016: Furious Rory McIlroy smashes three-wood into pieces after horror shot on 16th hole

Four-time Major winner let his anger get the better of him during third round at Royal Troon

RORY McILROY smashed his three-wood into pieces as his frustration boiled over during round three of the Open.

The world No 4 launched the club in front of himself and watched it break in two as it bounced through the air.

McIlroy said he needed a quick start to have any hope of catching leader Phil Mickelson but played the front nine in one over.

And after a wild second shot to the par-five 16th that dove into the crowd to the right of the green he decided enough was enough.

The former Open champ's shot flew miles right and then he exploded with rage

And he said a mix of frustration and the fact that club was dodgy anyway contributed to his rage.

He said: "The clubhead came loose on it earlier on in the week. I had to get the head re-glued. So it was partly to do with that and partly the throw as well.

"I'll get it reshafted tonight and all will be well in the morning."

The four-time Major winner has previous for this sort of behaviour.

At the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March last year he threw a three-iron into a lake.

But he saved himself a fine of around £15,000 after apologising for his outburst.
