Nice attacks: French golfer Clement Sordet with ‘Pray for Nice’ cap lives just 500 metres from where attacks took place

Golfer revealed his girlfriend's mum was at Bastille event and that he is praying for those caught in massacre

FRENCH golfer Clement Sordet who wore a 'Pray for Nice' cap lives just 500 metres from where the terrorist attack took place.

The Open competitor had the message "Pray for Nice" written on the bill of his white baseball cap throughout his second round at Royal Troon.

The Challenge Tour star, who finished on eight over for two rounds, said his girlfriend Marie's mum was at the Bastille event.

And he is now praying for those in his home country caught up in the atrocity.

He said: "I tried not to think about it, but that's why I had this on my hat.

"I live in Nice. It happened maybe 500m from where I live.

"My girlfriend is from Nice and she has family there. It was a big party last night because it was the 14th of July, so we had a bunch of friends and my girlfriend's mum was there.

"They're safe now, so everything's OK. But I feel really bad for all of the other guys.

"I'm really proud to be French, and I think we all need to support each other. I say my prayers and that's it."

At least 84 people have died after a truck ploughed through a pedestrian area during Bastille day celebrations last night.

Sordet is certain to miss the cut and though he said the attacks did not make him nervous ahead of his round, can clearly be excused for his scores as France is rocked by another terrorist attack.

Sordet, 23, sported the message on his cap as he teed off in overcast conditions in the opening group at 6.35am this morning.

Tournament organisers the R&A have confirmed black ribbons will be available for all players to wear.

Other golfers expressed dismay at the sickening attacks.
