The Open 2016: Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston downed beer and whisky with ‘Wild Thing’ John Daly… and ended up sitting by the pool in his pants
ANDREW ‘BEEF’ JOHNSTON has revealed he tried to keep up with his idol John Daly in an all-day boozing session – and ended up slumped by the pool in his pants.
Johnston is building a reputation as a colourful character like two-time major-winner Daly.
Beef, 27, famously said he wanted to get “hammered” after winning the Spanish Open in April
But he learnt the hard way no one can match ‘Wild Thing’ Daly when it comes to drinking, when the pair met last year.
Johnston said: “I walked straight up to him in Germany a few years ago and I said, ‘I’m Andrew. I read your book. You’re a legend.’ He went, ‘OK, cool!’
I don’t know what time it was but I was by the pool in my pants. My girlfriend, Louise, was shouting for me to go to bed

“I played with him in the Dunhill last year and he was playing in Turkey last year. I had lunch with him a couple of times and I get on with him well.
“But I remember we’d finished the tournament - it was my last one of the year - and I played well, finishing tenth, I was happy.
“We were having lunch and I had a beer… then that turned into three, four, five and six and then they brought out this big bucket of booze.

“Then we decided to head back to his hotel and we whipped out the whisky. And then that was it!
“I don’t know what time it was, man, but I was by the pool in my pants. My girlfriend, Louise, was shouting for me to go to bed.
“But I was just out there shouting, ‘Ahhh!’ with just my pants on! Apparently I just ended up staggering out.”
Johnston turned his nose up to a plate of haggis when SunSport offered him Scotland’s most famous dish ahead of The Open at Royal Troon.
The Londoner has recently eaten a 32-ounce steak and smashed a driver through a burger.
And he revealed Daly gave him the most memorable career advice he’s ever had.
Johnston added: “The guy can play and meeting him, you see he’s got a really big heart. I don’t know if a lot of people realise that.
“He always comes up to say hi and one of the interesting things he told me was when, after I asked him for advice on my career, he said: ‘F*** it’.
“He told me not to worry about money, he said if I’m happy then I’ll probably play better.
“My girlfriend wasn’t travelling with me, I never saw her, but she’s come out this year and I’ve started playing better and it’s been a good piece of advice.
“He said I had to do what’s going to make me happy. If I’m travelling with someone I’m not going to be bored and he told me just to go and do it. He told me not to think about it.”
But was the biggest lesson learning never to try to match Daly at boozing?
Johnston, who declared he wanted to get “hammered” after winning the Spanish Open back in April, said: “It was crazy. But I’ll probably give it another go. I’m stupid enough to!”
