LEE WESTWOOD’S hopes of finally winning his first Major were buried by an avalanche of early bogeys in the final round of the US Open.
Westwood and his supporters had high hopes that this could be his turn after nine previous top three finishes in the Majors.
He set out in joint fourth place, five shots behind third round leader Shane Lowry, but one of only six players in the field below par.
That situation did not last long, as Westy suffered a horror run of SEVEN dropped shots from the second to the seventh hole.
Five bogeys were sandwiched by an agonising double at the fifth, with his old Achilles heel – a misbehaving putter – proving his biggest enemy.
Westwood finished on eight over par in a tie for 32nd place, and his wait for an elusive Major went on.
