Moyes said: “This squad is short of numbers.  There’s no doubt we have to make some signings.”

The Scot has confirmed he wants to bring both of his former Old Trafford stars to Sunderland.

Moyes made midfielder Fellaini, 28, his first major United signing when he bought him for £27.5million from his old club Everton in 2013.

He also handed winger Januzaj, 21, his Premier League debut.

Moyes, 53, added:  “If either of those players want to come to the North East, I will drive down there and pick them up.

“They’re excellent players. We’re interested but I’m sure other clubs are as well. I’d love to get that level of player to this football club and that is my aim.”

Moyes admits he would take finishing fourth bottom given the current players at his disposal. And he insisted his predecessor Sam Allardyce worked wonders to keep the side in the Premier League last season.

Sunderland are the only club in the Prem yet to make a summer signing and they have also lost last year’s loan stars DeAndre Yedlin and Yann M’Vila.

Moyes added: “We don’t have long to make things work.

“I think Sam did brilliantly to keep them up, an incredible job.

“We need to get some players in to improve. I need competition and at the moment we don’t have that.

“I would like to strengthen in most areas. In the short-term I am trying to buy  to keep me up.

“I have assurances we can improve the squad.

“It may not be the outrageous figures but  wheeling and dealing is part of the job now.”
