Leicester offer Kasper Schmeichel and Danny Drinkwater new £80,000 a week contracts in hope of holding onto Premier League title heroes

Foxes have made the first move to securing star pair's futures as they prepare for exciting Champions League campaign

LEICESTER have offered Danny Drinkwater and Kasper Schmeichel new contracts to hold onto last season’s title heroes.

The deals are believed to be worth £80,000 a week as the club looks to reward it’s Premier League-winning squad.

Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri already lost key midfielder N’Golo Kante to Chelsea in a £32million deal this summer.

And he faces a battle to hold onto maestro Riyad Mahrez, with the Algerian seemingly intent on a Barcelona move after snubbing a new contract at the King Power.

But the Midlands club managed to tie down star striker Jamie Vardy with a £100k-a-week contract and captain Wes Morgan on a three-year deal.

New contracts for Drinkwater, 26, and Schmeichel, 29, as reported by the , would be a huge boost for Ranieri as he prepares for a busy season in the Champions League.

Drinkwater admitted negotiations had not started last week at Leicester’s training camp in Austria.

He said: “I am not going chasing the club. It is up to them to approach me. I would love to commit but I just want to play football.

“I still have two years left on my contract so it is not a be all and end all if I don’t sign a new one in the next few weeks.

“I’m still under contract so I can’t really say too much but I’m a Leicester City player at the minute. It’s up to them how they handle it.”

Leicester lost chief scout Steve Walsh – responsible for bringing in Kante, Vardy and Mahrez – to Everton where he takes the role of Director of Football.
