Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri already lost key midfielder N'Golo Kante to Chelsea in a £32million deal this summer.

And he faces a battle to hold onto maestro Riyad Mahrez, with the Algerian seemingly intent on a Barcelona move after snubbing a new contract at the King Power.

But the Midlands club managed to tie down star striker Jamie Vardy with a £100k-a-week contract and captain Wes Morgan on a three-year deal.

New contracts for Drinkwater, 26, and Schmeichel, 29, as reported by the , would be a huge boost for Ranieri as he prepares for a busy season in the Champions League.

Drinkwater admitted negotiations had not started last week at Leicester's training camp in Austria.

He said: “I am not going chasing the club. It is up to them to approach me. I would love to commit but I just want to play football.

“I still have two years left on my contract so it is not a be all and end all if I don’t sign a new one in the next few weeks.

“I’m still under contract so I can’t really say too much but I’m a Leicester City player at the minute. It’s up to them how they handle it.”

Leicester lost chief scout Steve Walsh - responsible for bringing in Kante, Vardy and Mahrez - to Everton where he takes the role of Director of Football.
