Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson hails Euro 2016 winner Cristiano Ronaldo as the ‘best footballer of this generation’

The ex-Old Trafford boss heaped praise on the Portugal hero and shows who he thinks is better out of Lionel Messi and Ron

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as this generations "special footballer".

Ronaldo, 31, captained Portugal to Euro 2016 glory and helped Real Madrid to their record 11th Champions League title last season.

And former Manchester United boss - who managed Ronaldo from 2003 to 2009 - reckons it is the striker's immense work ethic that sets him apart from the likes of rival Lionel Messi.

Ferguson told Bild: "He has an incredible desire for football, Cristiano is looking forward to each workout.

"He always wants to be better, to win. He especially loves these big games.

"During my time at Manchester United, Cristiano was the player who developed the most. Through much hard work.

"His performance improvement is incredible. And what is remarkable, today's football is so athletic, so fast.

“Usually top players can only play for about five or six years at the highest level, then it's over. Cristiano has been doing this for over 10 years. That makes him so exceptional.

"Every generation has its special footballer, Cristiano is currently."

Legendary boss Sir Alex was on hand in Paris after Portugal defeated France to congratulate Ronaldo after the game.

Ronaldo was forced off the pitch after just 24 minutes due to a knee injury he picked up when he collided with Dimitri Payet.
