Sanches beat off competition from international team-mate Raphael Guerreiro for the award as well as Bayern Munich colleague and beaten France finalist Kinsley Coeman.

The former Benfica man featured in six of Portugal’s seven matches in the tournament and netted his first international goal against Poland in the quarter-final.

The award is open to players born in 1994 or later and selected by Uefa technical observers including Sir Alex Ferguson.

And that could hurt Manchester United who were heavily linked with a move for the youngster.

But Sanches will link up with Munich later this month after the Germans shelled out £28million to sign him from Benfica – and the fee could rise to £63m depending on his performances under Carlo Ancelotti at the Allianz Arena.

Sanches had already broken records for being the youngest player at the tournament for Portugal and the youngest scorer in a knock-out round game.
