Euro 2016: Wales players pay tribute to ‘unbelievable’ Dragons fans after semi-final defeat to Portugal
Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Ledley and Co salute supporters as France dream finally ends in Lyon
WALES players paid tribute to their amazing fan support throughout Euro 2016 after semi-final heartbreak against Portugal.
Chris Coleman’s 80-1 outsiders surpassed all expectations in their first finals in 58 years to earn a last-four tie against Portugal.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani ended the dream in Lyon – but the players did not forget the fans whose rousing singalongs carried them to history.
Talisman Gareth Bale led the applause, writing on Facebook: “No regrets tonight, we gave everything. Thank you for all the support!”
Bearded hero Joe Ledley, who with the rest of the team will celebrate the campaign with an open-top bus tour in Cardiff from 4pm tomorrow, delivered probably the most heartfelt message of the lot.
The Crystal Palace midfielder, who broke his leg a month before Euro 2016 began, wrote: “First of all I’d like to thank @seanconnelly260 @sportsdrzaf for making me get fit then Chris Coleman in picking me and believing in me.
“You fans have been a credit to the nation unbelievable through out the euros well done. Without you not sure this would happen.
“What me and my team has done is incredible will go done in history I’m sure but trust me this is only the beginning. I love my nation.”
Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey wrote: “Proud of every player and member of staff at @fawales but all the welsh fans have been unbelievable thank you so much love you all.”
Chris Gunter posted: “Don’t be sad Wales. It’s a time to be proud of our country. You lot have given us so much. Diolch yn fawr.”
Sub striker Simon Church said: “Amazing journey thank you so much for your support we couldn’t have done it without you #TogetherStronger.”
And James Collins wrote on Instagram: “Had the time of my life with an unbelievable set of lads and staff.
“Very lucky man to be part of something so special. Thank you to each and every fan who followed us in this amazing journey, without you it wouldn’t have been possible. Love you brothers.”
