ERLING HAALAND announced himself to European football with a stunning hat-trick as the new Champions League season began.

It was just one of a number of shocks to take place on Tuesday as Chelsea, Liverpool and Benfica lost while Barcelona's underwhelming form on the road continued.

Liverpool succumbed 2-0 to Napoli in Group E as late defensive mistakes cost the Reds, in contrast to Genk's game with Salzburg where the visitors' errors rained down from the first minute.

A clinical first-half hat-trick from Erling Haaland earned the Austrians a stunning 6-2 win.

Haaland, born in Leeds to former Premier League defender Alf-Inge, already had three hat-tricks to his name this season and became the first player to net a treble on his Champions League debut since Wayne Rooney in 2004.

Given his Yorkshire heritage, fans may hope England can nab the 19-year-old for themselves but he has already featured in competitive action for Norway.

Hwang Hee-Chan, Dominik Szoboszlai and Andreas Ulmer also scored for Salzburg - who go to Anfield in gameweek two.

FLYING DUTCHMEN

If Liverpool's success last season didn't carry over to Tuesday night, Ajax's did.

A 3-0 win at home to Lille set last year's semi-finalists on their way to the knockouts in a finely balanced Group H.

They may even be favourites to qualify given Chelsea's transition and Valencia's turmoil, which was put to one side thanks to a 1-0 smash-and-grab at Stamford Bridge.

Ross Barkley missed a late penalty in another bump in the road for Frank Lampard's start to life in the Blues dugout.

Similarly, Borussia Dortmund missed a glorious chance to beat Barcelona in Group F after Marco Reus fluffed his lines from the spot.

Dortmund were handed a penalty following Nelson Semedo’s challenge on Jadon Sancho — but Marc-Andre ter Stegen pulled off a brilliant double save to keep Barca level at 0-0.

The Blaugrana gave a start to 16-year-old sensation Ansu Fati in Germany - and had Lionel Messi available off the bench - but can now boast just three wins from their last 11 European away days.

In the same group, Romelu Lukaku’s Inter Milan scored a last-gasp equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Slavia Prague. Peter Oladeji Olayinka struck in the 63rd minute for the visitors, but sub Nicolo Barella bundled in late on.

In Group G, United flop Memphis Depay scored a penalty to ensure Lyon began their European adventure without defeat against Zenit Saint Petersburg. Sardar Azmoun put the Russians ahead before half-time, but Depay made it 1-1.

RB Leipzig top that group after a narrow 2-1 win away to Benfica — Timo Werner scoring twice.
