MANCHESTER UNITED could launch a £90million transfer bid for Declan Rice, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds and Middlesbrough forward, 44, has bizarrely claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could make a mega-money swoop for the West Ham and England star in January.
Whelan believes Man Utd are sorely lacking in the middle of the park and reckons Rice is the perfect fit.
Now-BBC Radio Leeds commentator Whelan told Football Insider: “West Ham have got a really special player on their hands.
“They will struggle to hold on to him, because the big clubs will be hot on his trail.
“I think Declan Rice could be the next player who goes for a Premier League record fee.
"We have just seen Harry Maguire go for £80million and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice goes for more than that, above £90m, even.
“He’s young, English, hugely talented and is such a long way from his peak.
"You look at a team like Man Utd, who need a midfield anchorman and you can see it happening.
“They don’t mind paying over the odds for a player, as we saw in the summer. I could see them looking to get Rice in January.”
MORE MAN UTD STORIES
Solskjaer has already shown he is keen on developing young, homegrown talent.
This summer alone, the Man Utd boss brought in £85m defender Maguire, 26, £50m right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 21, and Wales star Daniel James for £15m, who is also 21.
With United lacking in the middle of the park, with Nemanja Matic and Fred failing to inspire, Rice could be just the man for Solskjaer.
