MANCHESTER CITY defender Aymeric Laporte was taken to hospital on Saturday after suffering an injury against Brighton.

A nasty collision with opposition player Adam Webster badly hurt the Frenchman's knee and he was stretchered off after just 35 minutes.

Speaking after the 4-0 win, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Laporte's injury "doesn't look good".

He told reporters: "I think he's gone to hospital. It doesn’t look good.

"I don’t know right now what he has but we will know tomorrow.

"They’re diagnosing what he has right now. I’m waiting for the doctor to call me.

"He might be out for a while."

France take on Albania and Andorra in the coming week's Euro 2020 qualifiers and Guardiola's comments suggest Laporte is highly unlikely to make those games.

Therefore City will be looking ahead to a set of quickfire matches that they may have to face without their star centre-back.

The start of their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns mean playing twice for three consecutive weeks after the international break.

Trips to Everton and Shakhtar Donetsk are amongst those games, with Norwich and Wolves also on the horizon.

But City's worries will be eased if John Stones returns to fitness in the next fortnight.

Out with a thigh injury, the England defender was described as "much better" by coach Guardiola having returned to training before sitting out Saturday's win.
