CRYSTAL PALACE crashed out in the first round of the Carabao Cup - losing on penalties to League Two Colchester United.
Andros Townsend was the villain, missing the first effort with no other player failing to score.
Norwich City were another Premier League club to fall at the first hurdle, the Canaries losing to Crawley Town.
Elsewhere, Jack Wilshere scored his first goal for West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini's side beat Newport County and Aston Villa cruised to a 6-1 win at Crewe Alexandra.
Bitter rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby County clashed in the East Midlands derby, but it was not much of a contest as Forest beat the Rams 3-0.
Jack Butland was the hero for Stoke in a 2-2 draw at Leeds United, scoring a penalty in the shootout and then getting a fingertip to Jack Harrison's deciding effort.
