His last club was Phoenix Rising, an Arizona-based football team who play in the second tier of the US league system.

Wright-Phillips made the announcement appearing on this morning.

He said: "I was trying to hold on to [my career] for as long as possible.

"But over the last few weeks, I've decided it is time to be official and say: I'm officially retired.

"I was doing stuff with Manchester City and little stuff with TV - and it helped me glide out of it.

"I knew growing up it was not something that lasts forever, but after I had my last operation, it fell into place."

The fleet-footed winger began his career with Manchester City in 1999.

He joined Premier League champs Chelsea in 2005 for £21m, and went on to win the Premier League and FA Cup in his three-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

Wright-Phillips then played for QPR before deciding to try his luck over the water in Major League Soccer.

He spent one season with the New York Red Bulls before moving down the ladder there to the second tier with Phoenix Rising, that proved to be his last club as a pro.
