'WE DECIDE WHO TAKES IT'

Solskjaer and Rashford explain how Pogba ended up taking and missing Man Utd penalty at Wolves

MARCUS RASHFORD let Paul Pogba take over spot-kick duties last night - only to see the £89million midfielder fluff his penalty against Wolves.

Pogba's brilliant run resulted in a spot kick when he was tripped by Conor Coady.

But the French World Cup winner saw his 68th minute penalty saved by Rui Patricio, with Rashford having to watch on.

Rashford scored from the spot in the 4-0 win over Chelsea and has netted all four of his pens in senior football.

The England striker, 21, also scored the injury-time winner against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last season.

Pogba on the other hand has missed four penalties in the league since the start of last season.

That is more than any other player in the Premier League.

Footage showed Pogba and Rashford - who also scored from the spot in England's Nations League win over Holland and in the penalty shootout victory over Colombia in the World Cup last year - discussing who should take the penalty.

Rashford is seen letting Pogba, 26, take the ball and place it on the spot - after patting him on the back to give his approval.

But the move backfired, prompting strong criticism from Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

Man Utd legend Neville fumed: "This is not tombola. This is not five a side. Why is there a debate on who takes a penalty?

"Rashford scored last week. Take the penalty.

"But there wasn't a leader on the pitch. Something is not right there.

"Initially I was fuming with Pogba. I'm holding back on Pogba because he may be the penalty-taker here. It isn't right. They should decide before they play.

"This is not right. This is a Manchester United penalty.

Carragher added: "I would like to think of the team and tell Rashford he can take them or [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer to be strong and tell Pogba that Rashford is taking them.

"It's a joke."

But Rashford said he had no problem with Pogba taking the spot kick.

He said: "Paul wanted to take it, so he took it.

"Everyone can miss a penalty. He's scored countless penalties for us. It's normal to miss one.

"We decide who wants to take it. The confidence you are going to score the goal is always the same.

'PAUL WANTED IT - HE TOOK IT'

"We practise all the time. There is no reason why we shouldn't score. It's not on Pogba, it's on the team."

United boss Solskjaer insists he will not change how penalties are handled.

Asked whether he needed to address the decision-making behind who takes spot kicks, Solskjaer said: "Not at all.

"The two of them are confident and good penalty takers and I've been in that situation myself, gone up and missed a penalty for Norway.

"When there's two names there, it's the one who's the most confident and Paul has scored so many before, so absolutely no problem.

"It doesn't have to be (one taker), no.

"Because sometimes in a game you do grow in confidence. Sometimes 'I don't want to take it today because I had a bad day'.

"Absolutely no problem with players walking up and saying, 'this is mine'."
