Ex-Charlton defender Richard Rufus to appear in court after being accused of £5.3m fraud
EX-CHARLTON defender Richard Rufus will appear in court next month after being accused of fraud worth MILLIONS.
The 44-year-old is scheduled to attend Southwark Crown Court on September 5 over possessing £5.3m of criminal property and fraud by false representation.
It is claimed he spent a “large proportion on his personal expenses and lifestyle”, a court heard.
Rufus appeared at City of London Magistrates’ Court and spoke only to confirm his personal details.
His charges were for fraud between 2007 and 2012.
reported prosecutor Roger Makanjuola telling the court: ‘The Crown’s case is that the promises he made to these people were not sustainable and were in fact fraudulent.

Rufus earned six England Under-21 caps during a one-club playing career spent at Charlton.
He retired through injury in 2004 and was later inducted into the club hall of fame at The Valley.
