Fernandes, Sporting’s captain, even had objects launched in his direction as he prepares for his £63million move.

And he posted an apology to everyone involved with Sporting on Instagram.

Fernandes wrote: “This is not a time for many words, it is not a time to raise our heads.

“It is a time to bow our heads and think about the mistakes we have made and that we should never make them again.

ON THE MOVE?

“It is the moment to think about what made us win, cups we won last year and that the unity and fellowship we had led us to these achievements!”

It is likely to be one of his final messages to Sporting fans too, after he met with club chiefs last week to state his intentions to leave.

The Primeira Liga giants have agreed to sell him, with United on the prowl all summer, but only if the £63m valuation is met.

However, Tottenham are also thought to be keeping an eye on Fernandes, with star man Christian Eriksen almost certain to leave this summer.

Big-spending Real Madrid had been in the market for the Dane, but their interest appears to have cooled as they prioritise a mega-money move for Paul Pogba.

And the has alerted the interest of Man Utd, who could replace Pogba with Eriksen – as well as diving into the market for Fernandes.

But with their £85m move for Harry Maguire – as well as the £50m signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Old Trafford chiefs may have to settle for just one of the star pair.
