Shawcross was raced to the Royal Stoke University Hospital and held for two nights but is now home following surgery which was regarded as a success.

Stoke believe it is too early to speculate on how long their star defender might be out.

Manager Nathan Jones said: “Ryan was looking really sharp and motivated and his injury is primarily a massive blow to him but also to us as a group.”

However Stoke chairman Peter Coates has told his stricken skipper he will receive all the support he requires as when he starts his recovery process.

He added: "The injury is a huge disappointment.

"It's a huge disappointment for Ryan and a huge disappointment for the team and the club.

";To be missing such an important and popular player is a big blow, but we will do everything we can to get him back up and running as quickly as we can.

"He is a very strong character and that will also stand him in good stead during his recovery. He came back for pre-season, as he always does, in a very good condition because he takes his professional life so seriously.

"So to now have this happen on the eve of the season is dreadful timing for everyone, not least Ryan himself.

"But knowing Ryan, I'm sure he sees himself playing for several years yet and we all want to see him back as soon as is possible."
