'I LOVE IT'

Man Utd star Victor Lindelof says Harry Maguire transfer would be ‘perfect’ to kick club’s defenders into gear

VICTOR LINDELOF insists signing Harry Maguire would be "perfect" despite it meaning extra competition for a spot in Manchester United's backline.

The Swedish international, 25, has been used as one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's key men throughout their pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East.

He is one of six centre-backs already at Old Trafford, with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe battling it out for starting place.

But United are still pressing ahead with their pursuit of Leicester City and England star Maguire.

And when quizzed about his impending arrival, Lindelof welcomed the extra competition with open arms.

Speaking to , the £31m signing from Benfica back in 2017 said: "I like the competition. I love it, actually.

"I think it's great for a club to have that competition.

"If you have good players in your position you have to work hard every day, especially in training, and that helps a team to go to the next level as well.

"For me it's perfect. I like it. I think everyone at this club wants to be at the highest level.

"I'm very good friends with them all. In training we compete and then off the pitch we are friends. That's how it should be."

Meanwhile, Solskjaer insisted earlier he will not give up his pursuit of Maguire just because the two clubs are struggling to get a deal over the line.

United are desperately trying to reach an agreement with Leicester over the capture of the England defender - who is understood to be pushing for the move to Old Trafford.

Leicester have refused to be bullied into selling below their valuation, with United only prepared to go to £80million for Maguire.

That delay has caused problems for United boss Solskjaer, who wanted any new signings in place for the majority of pre-season to bed them into the squad.

But the Norwegian insists he will not change his targets just because the club have stumbled on a snag in their attempts to land the 26-year-old.

Solskjaer said: "It will take time for any player to adjust to Man United. Apart from me! It took me six minutes in the first game.

"I’m very happy with Wan-Bissaka and James but we’ve got to be patient.

"It’s a long haul and it’s very important that we get the right ones in.

"We can’t just jump on a different path when you hit a hurdle. I’ve not had a frustrating feeling at all."
