Newcastle confirm club transfer record £40million deal for Joelinton from Hoffenheim
NEWCASTLE have smashed their club transfer record to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim for £40million… even though axed boss Rafa Benitez told them he was only worth HALF that amount.
The Brazilian striker, 22, has penned a six-year deal with Steve Bruce’s side.
Joelinton will wear Newcastle’s iconic No9 shirt – which was worn by Salomon Rondon last season.
The 22-year-old is expected to make his debut for Bruce’s side in the pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Saturday.
Newcastle announced their first signing of the summer by sharing a video with their 1.4million Twitter followers.
It shows Joelinton’s rise from the streets of Brazil to his first steps out onto the pitch at St James’ Park.
And it brilliantly compares Christ the Redeemer to the Angel of the North as it claims “football is like a religion”.
Speaking on the , Joelinton said: “I’m really happy to be here.
“I know it’s a large investment that the club has made in me, and that comes with huge responsibility.
“I’m highly motivated and hope to give back on the pitch.”
Bruce added: “The kid’s got an exciting time ahead of him. He’s a smashing young player and we’re obviously delighted to get him.
“It’s been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody.
“He’s got everything that a modern-day player wants. He’s big, strong and athletic, and of course he’s got age on his side too which is vitally important.
“He’s learned the history and wanted it [the No 9 shirt], and that’s always a big shirt to fill.
“But in his eyes, it was ‘bring it on – it’s what I’m here for’. He’s risen to that challenge, and I’m sure he will be a big, big favourite of the supporters.
“He’s got an incredible work-rate about him, he’s got a really good humility about him, and all the attributes a top striker needs.”
