Martinelli scores amazing Arsenal debut goal with his chest before Emery hints at shock first team role for Brazilian teenager
GABRIEL MARTINELLI marked his Arsenal debut with a memorable goal which led manager Unai Emery to hint he could have a role to play in the first-team this season.
The Brazilian teenager is the Gunners’ only signing so far this summer.
The 18-year-old was expected to develop in the academy during his first year in England, however growing excitement about the youngster is now in overdrive after a fine display against Colorado Rapids.
Arsenal won the pre-season clash 3-0 with Martinelli the standout performer in a young side.
The playmaker capped his performance with a brilliantly taken goal scored using his chest.
He ran at speed onto a Dominic Thompson cross and improvised superbly to find the back of the net and make it 3-0.
But Arsenal fans also noted his incredible work rate, with the former Ituano player tracking back with amazing enthusiasm before being replaced by Mesut Ozil with just over 10 minutes to go.
EMERY IMPRESSED
Following the dream debut, Emery was asked if the £6million signing could have a role to play this season.
His answer hinted that Martinelli could push the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette for a place in the first team.
He said: “Our idea is to give every young player chances to be with us, first in training and after in matches.
“The idea is to continue with them and give them chances.
“They will win chances to show us what they can do.”
Emery appeared to be holding back his star players for Arsenal's clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Aubameyang, Lacazette and Ozil only played for a short time against Colorado but can expect to start in the International Champions Cup clash later this week.
But after his fine first appearance, Martinelli could be pushing to join them.
