Flop Alvaro Morata ends Chelsea hell with £58m permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid

ALVARO MORATA has finally ended his Chelsea hell after Atletico Madrid agreed a £58million permanent transfer for the striker.

The Spaniard remains on loan at the Wanda Metropolitano for the 2019-20 campaign, after which he will sign a lasting contract on July 1, 2020.

Frank Lampard's side had threatened the La Liga giants with triggering the 26-year-old's recall clause unless they made his return to the Spanish capital permanent.

Morata had already begun pre-season training with Diego Simeone's men after openly revealing his ambition to remain at Los Rojiblancos.

After the news was announced by the club, he tweeted: "Happy. It's official now.

"Now I'll have time to return with work and goals for all the effort of the club and the affection of the fans. Thank you!!!"

The transfer finally ends his torrid two-year spell in west London following his then club-record £60m move from Real Madrid for in 2017.

Although he was part of Chelsea's FA Cup winning side in 2017-18, he only managed to score 24 goals in his 72 appearances for the Blues.

Yet since moving to the club he spent time with as a youth star in January, Morata netted six goals in 17 games as Atletico finished second.

Los Colchoneros have already spent £113m to sign Joao Felix from Benfica, making the 19-year-old the fifth most expensive player ever.

However, they are in the midst of recovering most of that fee with Antoine Griezmann's impending £107m sale to Barcelona, freeing up funds for Morata.

Chelsea meanwhile are expected to head into the new season with Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham as their striking options.

Gonzalo Higuain was allowed to return to parent club Juventus after his six-month loan, but the Blues transfer ban means he won't be replaced.
