Balotelli has long been chasing a return to Serie A, having not played there since the 2015-16 season, on loan at AC Milan.

Since ending his woeful spell at Liverpool in 2016, Balotelli has been turning heads in France.

The ex-Inter Milan and Manchester City striker scored 33 times in 61 Ligue 1 games at Nice, before adding eight in 12 at Marseille.

Balotelli burst back into the Italy set-up under Roberto Mancini as he rediscovered his form of old in the south of France.

However, after the 36-cap international arrived for pre-season late and reportedly out of shape ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, cracks began to show.

His rift with Nice boss Patrick Vieira continued to worsen and ultimately his contract was terminated in January.

Balotelli swiftly signed for Marseille to great effect, but is now hunting for a new club.

And he has plenty of suitors in his native Italy too, with Fiorentina joined by Parma and Genoa in chasing his signature on a free transfer.

The one major sticking point seems to be Super Mario's wage demands.

Marseille were put off re-signing the striker due to his near-£4million per year pay-packet - and it could hamper any potential move this summer, unless he's willing to be more realistic.

For now, superagent Mino Raiola will continue to negotiate a deal - but it could be Balo is aiming for a shock return to a European powerhouse with the financial clout to match.
