He impressed at the Midlands side, who are keen to take him back for another year this summer.

But the 21-year-old Englishman wants to stay and fight for his starting place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It is understood Tuanzebe and the United boss will sit down at Carrington before the club fly out for pre-season on 8 July.

And the Norwegian is believed to be keen on giving his young defender a chance as he looks to promote youth.

IN WITH A SHOT

An Old Trafford source said: “Axel had a few injury issues at Villa but there is no doubt he is a top prospect.

“The manager will be happy to sit down and let him know where he stands at some point in the near future.

"The fact is the club are heading in a new direction with a greater emphasis on young players, so Axel could be in with a good shot.

United have no intentions of selling Tuanzebe unless a sizeable offer they cannot turn down comes in.

He is also in the final year of his contract, but the club are ready to trigger their 12-month extension option.
