CHELSEA will have to pay £4million in compensation to Derby for Frank Lampard - thanks to a sneaky 'Champions League clause'.
As things stand, Chelsea are yet to formally contact the Championship play-off finalists over appointing the 40-year-old, although he is huge favourite with the bookies to take charge.
Maurizio Sarri will be the Juventus manager next season after the sides last night agreed a £7m compensation deal.
SunSport revealed that the Blues hierarchy would prefer Lampard to have more time in management before making a swoop, however he is the fans’ favourite for the role.
But Chelsea will have to pay £4m because of the Rams' Champions League clause - the Blues will be in club football's biggest competition after winning the Europa League.
Should Lampard take over, he would be the first English manager to take charge of the club in 26 years.
Despite the doubts over Lamps - Chelsea's all-time top goalscorer - Jamie Redknapp thinks he would be the perfect appointment.
He told Sky Sports News: “Frank would be the perfect person. Sarri is still the manager right now so until that changes, if it were to change and if they need a manager next year, they need someone who's going to come in and stabilise the club.
"They have lost their best player [Eden Hazard] and they have got a transfer embargo for two or three windows, so you need someone that everybody loves and they will give them time."
