Saints expect to get the green light on a work permit for Djenepo, who has eight caps for Mali, next week.

The versatile winger grabbed 11 goals and six assists to help Standard to a Europa League finish and will add pace out wide.

While his combative nature saw him pick up 11 yellow cards and one red.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is hoping Djenepo is the first of a number of new signings through the door this summer after last season’s brush with relegation.

New attacking recruits are the priority with Birmingham striker Che Adams a long-standing target.

Out wide, Merseyside pair Harry Wilson and Ademola Lookman, who worked with Hasenhuttl at RB Leipzig, are being considered.

Southampton are also after a No10 as they seek more creativity, while a new right-back and centre-back to boost competition in defence. Swansea’s Connor Roberts is being monitored.
