MANCHESTER UNITED transfer target Matthijs de Ligt would "suit the club very well", according to club legend Jaap Stam.

The sought-after Ajax defender is on the radar of the Red Devils and Barcelona as well as a host of other European giants.

The 19-year-old seemed destined to follow teammate Frenkie de Jong to the La Liga giants but he has now claimed that his future is still undecided.

De Ligt has reportedly been offered a lucrative £236,000-a-week contract to lure him to Old Trafford, where Stam featured in the 5-0 legends match against Bayern Munich.

The 46-year-old, who played for both Ajax and United in his illustrious career, revealed he would "love to see" his compatriot snub Barca for the Red Devils.

He told Press Association Sport after the Treble Reunion game: "I think he would suit very well over here if they're trying to pick him up.

He is a player that absolutely fits in here. He's the type of player that a manager, I think, wants to work with

"I am not sure if that's the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.

"But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well.

"He's the type of player that a manager, I think, wants to work with."

Barcelona are still thought to be the favourites to land the Holland international after earlier reports claimed the Old Trafford giants have ruled out a move for him.

United fans had thought they'd been in the mix, after being given hope De Ligt himself wanted to head to Old Trafford.

The £65m-rated star claimed he wanted to be the "poster boy" for the club's rebuild, according to the Telegraph.

And fans were thrilled further after he was seen to like an Instagram post from former United legend Rio Ferdinand.
