United's current boss opened the scoring in fitting tribute to his Champions League final-winning antics in '99

THEY came to party like it was 1999…and for two glorious hours it could have been.
David Beckham and Paul Scholes spraying 40-yard balls to all points. Jaap Stam thundering into tackles as ferociously as anything on that night in the Camp Nou two decades earlier.
And up top, what else, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer showing that while the baby-face may have a few grey hairs to go with it these days, the assassin is still as deadly as ever.
After the season from hell, yesterday’s Treble Reunion against Bayern was almost like a counselling session for those fans who crammed into Old Trafford.
Close your eyes and you were back to the days when United ruled the European waves, not the ones of now, when even a ticket to compete in it is beyond them.
To be fair, they’d have a better chance with some of this lot in the team. Certainly Beckham, anyway, even now more dynamic than current No 7 Alexis Sanchez.
How fitting, then, that the biggest cheer of the day came when he finished off a day of smiles and, on occasions, stunning football with the fifth in front of nearly 70,000.
Of course the pace was slower than the night of THAT comeback. But some of the passing, some of the moves were still better than most of the dross served up here last season.
The finishes weren’t too shabby either. Even if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – off the bench after two minutes yesterday – could hardly miss from a yard out for the first.

Dwight Yorke could have done for the next, though, hooking in a superb volley from a ball that was actually behind him.
Nicky Butt’s sidefooted third, finishing the move he had started himself, was as cute as it comes, Louis Saha’s tap-in making it four – and Beckham clearly loving his day-capping fifth.
All in all a great day, and great memories. And what a pleasant change to see some decent football played in this stadium once more…
