FANS have ridiculed the statue of George Best after the sculpture of the Manchester United legend was unveiled outside Windsor Park.

The statute of the 1968 European Cup winner was shown to the public on what would have been the Northern Ireland legend's 73rd birthday.

Best - who passed away at the age of 59 in 2005 - won the Ballon d'Or in 1968, and will be regarded as one of the finest players to have ever graced the game.

Hundreds of people were in attendance for the unveiling of the statue - including Pat Jennings and Best's sister Barbara McNarry.

The life-size sculpture was created by Tony Currie from the art group Lecale Bronze and was funded through public donations in Belfast.

But sadly for the ex-Fulham ace, his statute has been heavily mocked, with some even comparing it to the awful bronze bust of Cristiano Ronaldo.

One tweeted: "Nice to see a statue depicting what George Best might look like if he rose from the dead to haunt your nightmares..."

While another commented: "F*** me looks like a villain from a Marvel movie."

Another added: "Ronaldo statue bad, George Best statue worse.”

One quipped: "That new George Best statue looks absolutely shocking, like a love child of Roger Moore and Skeletor, unbelievable."

Another said: "Please tell me the George Best statue is better in the ‘flesh’ than it is in the photographs."

While one joked: "They’d have been better stealing the Mr. Tumnus statue from round Lewis square and pretending that was George Best. Looks more like him than that shambles up at the national stadium."

Another simply stated: "That’s the worst statue I’ve ever seen."
