And Hazard has signed a lucrative four-year contract as a reward for his barnstorming form in German football.

The former Chelsea midfielder, who failed to make a single senior appearance at Stamford Bridge, joined Gladbach in 2014 on an initial loan deal before making the move permanent a year later for £6m.

Hazard scored 46 goals and assisted a further 44 during 176 appearances across five years.

And he has now joined Dortmund as a direct replacement for Christian Pulisic, who has gone to Chelsea for £58m to fill in for Thorgan's brother, Real Madrid-bound Eden Hazard.

Champions League finalists Liverpool and Europa League hopefuls Arsenal had both been tipped to make bids, but it's Dortmund who have won the race for Hazard's coveted signature.

And the winger admits he can’t wait to get cracking at his new club, saying: “I am grateful for five great years at Gladbach with very nice memories.

“This was the perfect time to take the next step in my career. I am proud to play for Dortmund, a top club with incredible fans.”

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc added: “We are delighted that Thorgan has decided to go to Dortmund.

“He is a seasoned Bundesliga player and Belgian national player who will help us with his pace and quality of finishing. The proof has been provided.”

The deal appears to have been in the making for some time, with Hazard recently confirming the switch after helping Gladbach to a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga table.

He said: “Axel Witsel is a player with who I speak with very often. Next year he will be there to help me.

“When a club like Dortmund calls you, the motivation is clear. It is good to have someone that I know there.

“I hope that I will adapt easily, but I don’t think there will be any issue.”
