'NOT A CLUE'

Neville rants at ‘shambolic’ Man Utd for considering Ferdinand and Fletcher for director of football roles

A shake-up is set to take place in the Old Trafford transfer department but Neville doesn't think the right candidates are being considered

GARY NEVILLE has slated Manchester United amid rumours that former stars Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher are up for the club's director of football role.

Neither player has held a job in football other than playing and yet find themselves in the mix to oversee the Red Devils' ailing transfer department.

For Neville, the suggestion that United will rely on the old guard to fill the role - rather than bringing in a world-renowned specialist - is a bad sign.

"How can it be that four players that have never been businessmen, never been sporting directors, are put forward for this difficult role at the biggest club in the world?" he said on Monday Night Football.

"It's a shambles.

"The first thing they have to do is cleanse the dressing room. Cleanse the club.

"That's from the top to the bottom. They need someone to run the football side of the club."

Every other football club in the country I can tell you who's in charge of signings... I haven't got a clue at United.

Ex-England defender Ferdinand held talks with United chief Ed Woodward last month but was reportedly dropped down the pecking order due to his lack of experience.

Fletcher, meanwhile, is available after leaving Stoke City but is also wanted by the Scottish FA to form part of their new national team setup.

Whether either man is eventually selected, Neville wants to see an overhaul at United after years of haphazard staff recruitment.

He continued: "There is a cultural problem at the football club.
