Ex-Arsenal manager Wenger ‘offered to Newcastle’ as Benitez replacement
Spaniard's contract is up at the end and despite him saying there have been 'positive talks' a deal hasn't been agreed yet
ARSENE WENGER has reportedly been offered to Newcastle as a replacement for Rafa Benitez if he leaves.
Despite guaranteeing Premier League safety for the Magpies this season, the Spaniard is yet to agree a new contract.
His current deal is up at the end of the season.
According to the , an agent "with strong links to former Arsenal boss" has been testing the water to see if the club would be interested in hiring Wenger.
Budgets and Newcastle's plans for the future are thought to be the key subject areas being assessed by the fixer, who believes the job could appeal to the Frenchman.
The 69-year-old has been out of work since Arsenal axed him last summer after 22 years in charge at the North London club.
He has been linked with the manager's job at Lyon if Bruno Genesio is sacked at the end of the season and a staff role with PSG.
But a return to the Premier League for one last crack could appeal more.
Benitez is constantly rumoured to be on the verge of a Newcastle exit, but just days ago he insisted talks over a new deal are "moving forward".
BENITEZ CONFIDENT
The Toon manager’s deal expires on June 30 and fans fear the Spaniard could walk away.
But Benitez has given supporters a boost by admitting progress has been made this week with managing director Lee Charnley.
He said: “I was talking with Lee Charnley this week and we will let you know as soon as we have more news.
“At the moment, it's just we have had another talk and we'll continue talking.
“I am positive that we are talking and everybody knows what is my idea.
“I would like to see this club growing and growing and going where I think it deserves to be.
“It seems that things are at least moving forward, and we will see if something is right at the end.
“We will let you know when we have any information. When you are talking, maybe you are getting closer.
“But still we have one week and we have time.
“I know it is not ideal, but still we have tome to see if we can find a solution.”
