MANCHESTER UNITED fans are begging Red Devils chiefs to break the bank on Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt after the Dutch side dumped Juventus out of the Champions League.

The defender led his team to a stunning 2-1 victory over the Serie A giants yesterday, scoring the winning goal with a thunderous header.

De Ligt, 19, has proved once again why top European clubs are battling it out to sign him this summer.

He was at the centre of events in Turin, stopping Juve's lethal firepower and then sealing the victory for Ajax.

And he was one of the key men responsible for humiliating Real Madrid in February when the Dutch side beat the La Liga giants 4-1 at the Bernabeu.

Following yesterday's game, De Ligt also showed incredible maturity for such a young player in a post-match interview.

Ajax have reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 22 years - and in impressive style, no less.

But the Dutchman calmly said his side still had some more work to do ahead of the clash with either Manchester City or Tottenham.

De Ligt told BT Sport: "We are never satisfied.

"There's so much potential in this team, we are all still quite young and you see us grow every game."

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has admitted De Ligt will certainly leave Amsterdam this summer, with Barcelona being the most likely destination.

Premier League giants, including Manchester United and Liverpool, have understandably been monitoring his situation.

And seeing the defender in action yesterday, Red Devils fans have pleaded with United chiefs to do whatever it takes in order to sign De Ligt - even if it means making him skipper.

Scott wrote: "Why aren’t United being linked with De Ligt every single day.... Literally should come in and be our captain."

Meanwhile, Edu tweeted: "United should sign De Ligt. At all costs."

Phil added: "I’ve officially flip flopped from Koulibaly or Varane to de Ligt as my ultimate centre-back signing."

And Usy wrote: "What are you waiting for ManUtd go and get de ligt for us..."
