Spurs to fight West Ham for Celta Vigo ace Gomez as they seek Kane back-up
North-Londoners need cover for the England international as his recent ankle injury highlighted their lack of attacking options
TOTTENHAM are planning to fight rivals West Ham for the signature of Maxi Gomez this summer.
The Celta Vigo forward has been a Hammers target for some time and their interest increased after the Marko Arnautovic saga in January.
22-year-old Gomez is said to be keen on a move and sparked further speculation last week when he refused to rule out a summer transfer.
The Uruguayan has a £43.5million release clause in his contract but Celta Vigo are reportedly willing to accept slightly less.
The Spanish club looked doomed to relegation earlier in the season but a good run since Christmas has seen them rise out of the relegation zone but they are only two points clear of 18th place Villarreal in La Liga.
Spurs are said to want cover for the injured Kane as Vincent Janssen looks likely to leave in the summer which leaves only Fernando Llorente as back-up, according to .
But, West Ham also expect to lose Arnautovic as well as Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez this summer meaning Gomez remains a top priority.
Despite the fact Spurs may be able to offer European football next year, it is unclear whether Gomez would be happy playing second fiddle to Kane when he would likely be top-dog at the London Stadium.
The forward has notched eleven goals and five assists from 29 appearances this season.
