He becomes Bayern's record transfer - smashing the £37.35m the Bundesliga club forked out to nab Corentin Tolisso from Lyon in 2017.

Hernandez - who won the World Cup with France last summer - will join his compatriot Benjamin Pavard at the end of the season in Bavaria.

Speaking of the transfer, Hernandez told : "This is a really important day in my footballing career.

"Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern.

"I’d like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years.

"Atletico will always remain a part of me. Now I’m looking forward to taking the next step with Bayern."

While sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic added: "I’m very happy to be able to sign one of the best defenders in the world, a World Cup winner, in Lucas Hernandez.

"Lucas can play both in central defence and at left-back. Moreover, Lucas will continue our great tradition of French footballers and improve our team."

Atletico have revealed that Hernandez - who has played 110 times for the club - turned down an offer to extend his stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The defender will play no further role under Diego Simeone this season after Bayern doctors noticed ligament damage in his right knee during his medical.

He will now undergo surgery on the injury where he will be available for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.
