GRANIT XHAKA is in a race against time to be fit to face Newcastle on Monday after the Arsenal midfielder picked up a minor thigh injury whilst on international duty.

The Gunners ace - who netted another long-distance screamer - went off in the 79th minute of Switzerland's 3-3 draw against Denmark in yesterday's Euro 2020 qualifier.

Switzerland were 3-0 up at time of the change, but the Nations League semi-finalists capitulated in the closing stages, leading fans to query why Xhaka was brought off.

Speaking of the substitution, boss Vladimir Petkovic said: "Xhaka could not stay on the pitch.

"He asked me ten minutes before to be replaced. Granit had adductor problems, he could not do any more."

Arsenal will now be sweating over his fitness, with the 26-year-old a standout performer under Unai Emery since he replaced Arsene Wenger.

Xhaka has featured in 32 games for the North Londoners this season - chipping in with four goals and three assists.

He has been tipped to be named as Arsenal's player of the season following a number of dazzling displays in the middle of the pitch.

But he recently dropped a bombshell regarding his future after declaring he is considering leaving the club just a year after signing a contract extension.
