Ronaldo’s offensive gesture appeared a direct answer to Simeone’s own extravagant reaction to Atletico’s second goal in the first leg.

And Uefa have now confirmed that Ronaldo has been charged with “improper conduct” for breaches two aspects of disciplinary rules.

Ronaldo is accused of “insulting conduct” which “violates the basic rules of decent conduct” and bringing football into disrepute.

The minimum sanction will be a heavy fine for the Portuguese ace.
