Monchi spent his playing career as a goalkeeper at Sevilla before taking on the role as Director of Football at the same club in 2000.

In his 17 years in the post, Monchi helped them win 11 trophies, including five Uefa Cup and Europa League titles.

Three of these were won by current Arsenal boss Unai Emery in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

But it was his ability to unearth young talent that has earned him such a strong reputation.

He helped find the likes of Sergio Ramos and Jose Antonio Reyes and brought them through the club's academy.

Meanwhile, he signed Dani Alves, Julio Baptista and Ivan Rakitic before selling them on for big profits.

Monchi's time at Roma may have come to a premature end but he is trying to keep upbeat as he was asked about the departure and if we have seen the "real Monchi".

He said: "I don't think it's time to look into these things. It's time to remember good things.

"I don't want to talk about it, I always want to stay with positive thinking, that is, to have had the chance to have worked in Rome and at Roma.

Sporting director Antero Henrique is under pressure - not helped by the club's Champions League exit - and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi may look to find a replacement.

Arsene Wenger has also been linked but if PSG want someone experienced in the role and also available, they will no doubt be considering Monchi.
