But sources claim the legendary Brazil defender is being considered by the club's hierarchy for a caretaker role if Santiago Solari is sacked.

The collapse of Real's season in the last two weeks has left Solari as a lame duck, but there are differing opinions inside the Bernabeu about what to do next.

Jose Mourinho has been strongly linked with a return to Madrid on a £17m-per-year mega deal.

But Sergio Ramos and other Real stars are said to have reacted with horror at the prospect of Mourinho coming back to the club he left in 2013.

Appointing a caretaker until the end of the season would give the Real board some breathing space.

But Carlos would be a left-field choice for the role, having had just two short stints as a manager in Turkey before his last job as boss of Delhi Dynamos in 2015.

Zinedine Zidane, Carlos' former team-mate in Real's first Galactico era, was made head coach in 2016 despite having no experience of managing at that level.

But Zidane had served two years as boss of Real's B team before being called upon in mid-season to replace Rafael Benitez.
