Telles hits extra-time penalty after more VAR drama in Champions League last-16 clash

Alex Telles scored a 116th minute penalty awarded by the controversial technology to send the 28-time Portuguese champions through

PORTO needed extra time to beat Roma as VAR decided a Champions League tie again in another dramatic conclusion in the last-16.

Locked at 3-3 on aggregate, the second leg at the Estadio do Dragao looked to be heading for penalties.

But after 116 minutes referee Cuneyt Cakır pointed to the spot after being asked to re-watch Alessandro Florenzi's shirt-pull on Fernando.

Alex Telles kept his cool and sent Robin Olsen the wrong way to put Sergio Conceicao's side through.

Trailing 2-1 from the first game, Francisco Soares gave Porto the lead with an easy tap-in.

But Daniele de Rossi's penalty again put the Serie A side on course to progress.

Moussa Marega took the game to extra time with a volleyed finish and spot kicks appeared an inevitability before the late drama - which leaves I Giallorossi boss Eusebio di Francesco on the brink.

Manchester United had earlier benefited from a VAR penalty decision in their tie with Paris Saint-Germain, which saw them knock-out the French champions thanks to Marcus Rashford's strike.

Uefa brought forward the use of the technology for the round of 16 - and it is having an immediate impact.

The manner of Porto's win continues the drama of the competition, after Ajax castled 13-time reigning champions Real Madrid on Tuesday.

They join Tottenham, Ajax and Manchester United in the hat for the last eight.

Both sides were looking to become the first sides of their respective nations to progress to the next stage.

But the match carried extra significance for Di Francesco, with his future appearing to rest on the club's continued progress in the competition.

And the pressure initially told on the Italians as the hosts regularly threatened to level the tie on aggregate.

Jesus Corona was a constant threat down the left, as he escaped the attention of the visitors' right-back Rick Karsdorp.

It was therefore no surprise that Porto opened the scoring on 26 minutes via an attack which originated down that side.

Telles andMarega combined to tee up Soares, who couldn't miss from inside the six-yard box.

Last season's semi-finalists now needed to hit back to ensure they were not eliminated on the away goals rule.

Indeed 11 minutes later Roma were level on the night when De Rossi beat Iker Casillas from the spot, after Eder Militao clumsily fouled Diego Perotti.

However, former Italy international De Rossi was forced off before the break with a hamstring injury.

Captain Hector Herrera almost restored the lead for Porto with an arrowing effort which was clawed away by Casillas.

The 28-time Portuguese champions had their lead back eight minutes after the resumption as Marega tapped home Corona's cross.

The game's major flash-point came just before the hour mark when Edin Dzeko attempted to get Pepe sent off by theatrically falling to the floor after brushing heads with the ex-Madrid centre-back.

Such hysterics were not in keeping with what has been a pulsating tie until that point.

Roma were struggling to reassert themselves after the loss of their skipper.

And Porto almost won it inside 90 minutes through substitute Yacine Brahimi's volley, but Casillas on his 175th Champions League appearance was equal to it.

Diego Perotti had perhaps the away side's best opening but couldn't capitalise on Pepe's error as he skewed his shot wide.

That would be the final chance of normal time as the game entered the additional 30 minutes.

After a cagey opening half, Dzeko should twice have sent Roma in the quarter-finals.

The Bosnian scooped his first effort over the bar but looked destined to score a minute later but his chipped effort was cleared off the line by Pepe.

And the double miss would come back to haunt Roma as ref Cakır awarded a VAR spot-kick leading to Telles converting - following Florenzi's drag-back on Fernando - to send the 2004 winners through.
