Arsenal fans want Fulham loanee Chambers in side after impressive Chelsea display
Calum Chambers put in another assured display at the base of the Fulham midfield against local rivals Chelsea, and fans of his parent club Arsenal were suitably impressed
FULHAM may have lost today’s lunchtime encounter with neighbours Chelsea, but there were reasons for the Craven Cottage faithful to be encouraged.
One of these was the confident display at the base of midfield by Calum Chambers, who scored the Cottagers’ goal in the 2-1 reverse.
The 24-year-old was also calm and assured in possession and was central to his side’s attempts to find an equaliser in the second half - and it wasn’t just supporters of Fulham that were impressed.
Chambers is on loan to the west London side from Arsenal, and plenty of Gunners fans took to social media to suggest that he should be brought back to the Emirates for next season.
User Kwikky’s left foot posted: “Calum Chambers playing some great football in the middle the Fulham midfield. I'm sure @UnaiEmery_ is watching with interest #arsenal”
An Arsenal fan simply calling herself C looked at the stats, saying: “Calum Chambers (DM) vs Chelsea - 1 goal, 78% passing accuracy, 3 tackles won, 2 interceptions, 2 clearances, 1 aerial won, 15 recoveries. Brilliant performance 100%”
Notorious AFC tweeted: “Hope we give Calum Chambers a chance next season”.
South African Gooner RichSnr went even further, posting: “Arsenal should have recalled Chambers in January he's better than Xhaka”.
Despite the praise, Chambers has stated a preference for playing at centre half – a role he’d have to battle for at Arsenal against Laurent Koscielny, Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding.
In February : “I do feel more comfortable at centre-half… I am quite big, and I just feel it suits my physique more with my reading of the game to be a centre-half.
“When I do drop back to centre-half (having played in midfield) is only going to help me on the ball. I now know what a midfielder would want from me as a centre-half, when you want the ball and when you might not want the ball.”
Chambers is on a season-long loan at Fulham, where he has made 23 appearances. He was also capped three times by England in 2014.
